Common Procedures in Cosmetic Dentistry

In the past, people with broken, chipped or cracked teeth had to be content with the way their teeth were; but today most dental defects can be corrected by a credible cosmetic dentist. Cosmetic dentistry is not just about correcting dental defects; it is also about restoring the confidence of people who were not able to smile confidently due to their 'dental condition.' This kind of dentistry is also known to reduce the signs of aging, thus giving you a youthful and vibrant appearance.

Perhaps one of the most important roles of cosmetic dentistry, is restoring to 'normal' dental conditions that are heredity, and those that are caused by trauma, infections and illnesses. Here is a look at some of the most common procedures in this field:

 Bleaching

One of the most common procedures performed in cosmetic dentistry is bleaching. Bleaching is basically the use of a whitening solution to make teeth brighter or 'whiter'.  People usually require their teeth bleached if they have stains or discoloration that is caused by medication, ageing, tea, coffee and even smoking. However, others just want to wear a brighter smile, and thus get a bleaching procedure done on their teeth.

Commonly known as teeth whitening, bleaching is not a complicated process and does not specifically require the services of a cosmetic dentist. The procedure can also be performed by your general dentist.

Crowns

Crowns or caps are used in cosmetic dentistry to restore the shape and appearance of teeth. Crowns can be expensive and are therefore, used as a last resort when other dental restoration procedures are not viable. They however, have the advantage of having a long-life expectancy when compared to other forms of dental restorations.

Veneers

Veneers are often used as an alternative to the more expensive crowns on teeth with uneven surfaces, those that are crooked, unevenly spaced, oddly shaped or discolored. Veneers are thin plastic or porcelain made pieces usually placed over teeth with the above "ailments" to restore them back to normal.

Teeth reshaping and contouring

The above named procedures are effective in correcting irregularly shaped, chipped and even crooked teeth. These procedures are also used to align teeth that are overlapping each other. Those with bite issues may also require teeth reshaping or contouring to correct their bite.

Cosmetic dentistry is, and continues to be revolutionary in the dentistry field. This is because the procedures performed by cosmetic dentists have an enormous beneficial impact on people's lives.
